Animal comment
Ramona is social with people and is dog tolerant at the shelter. Ramona likes to solicit for pets from people and giving kissing, but when she is excited she can be jumpy. She loves treats, she knows how to “sit” and takes them gently. .

03-JUN-25 - BEHAVIOR - 06/03/25 16:48 Ramona was repeatedly jumping and barking at the kennel door. CR held the leash low and waited until she calmed to leash her. She walked with a heavy pull at first but responded to stop and go. In the yard, she had loose posture, cruised around, and relieved herself. She had a short playgroup session with two male dogs. Ramona was easy to return to the kennel and unleash. -CR

23-MAY-25 - INTERACT - 05/23/25 16:16 Per volunteer: Ramona was easy to leash and she walked with a moderate pull and showing no reactivity towards the other dogs. Ramona immediately put her front paws up in my lap when I sat down on the ramp. She solicited for pets from head to tail. Ramona chased after, but did not return with any of the toys. She is very treat oriented and knows how to sit and shake for her treats. She also takes them gently. In the garden, she did a little exploring and came once time to transition back to the yard. Ramona was very engaging throughout the entire visit and was easy to return and unleash in her kennel.

07-MAY-25 - FOSTER - 05/07/25 16:17 Foster Note: Ramona is just the SWEETEST DOG who just wants love and attention! The entire time she was with us she didn't bark once. She didn't have any accidents in the house and actually preferred to sleep in her crate rather than the dog bed. Ramona absolutely loves treats, bones, and food! So much so that we decided a slow feeder bowl was better for her. The only thing was that she didn't like playing with my dog. My dog is bigger and more confident than Ramona so anytime she tried to play with Ramona, she just tried to mount her. When my dog didn't allow this, Ramona growled a little but as soon as I said 'no', she stopped. But they were around each other with no problems as long as my dog didn't try to play. I really hope this sweet girl finds her forever home. She really deserves it!

23-APR-25 - FOSTER - 04/23/25 12:14 Foster note: Day one with Ramona has been great!!! She is such a sweet girl! She will follow you anywhere you go and loves getting pets. She is very quiet. I haven't heard her back once. She is also crate and potty trained! She loves going for walks and can pull on the leash pretty hard at first but once you correct her she is good to go. She is very food motivated and her favorite trick is shake. When we first got to my house she had to sniff everything and it took a little while for her to relax and lay down. She is also scared easily by loud noises. All in all she is a wonderful, sweet, and loving dog!

21-APR-25 - INTERACT - 04/19/25 Per volunteer: Ramona was easy to leash and she walked with a medium pull, and ignoring other dogs along the way to the play yard. Ramona is very treat motivated and knows how to sit for shake and take treats gently (and likes to take them often). She's a friendly dog and allows for all pets from head to tail. We moved to the garden where she did a little independent exploring, but mainly stayed close by seeking treats. Back in the yard more pets and a few more treats. Ramona was easy to return to her kennel and was easy to unleash.

19-APR-25 - INTERACT - 04/19/25 12:22 Meet & Greet with adult female for foster Ramona was lying on her bed in the inner kennel facing away from the outside. She responded to a whistle and ran over to the door with wagging tail, open mouth/hanging tongue, and loose body language. She was easy to leash. Ramona had a slight pull, and did not pay attention to other dogs in kennels. She immediately sought affection from the two staff members and the citizen. She spent 90% of yard time in their vicinity getting pets and treats. Ramona understands sit and paw/shake. She is gentle with treats and appears to prefer Milk Bone over Pupperoni. Treat motivated. Ramona was returned to her kennel without issue. -KR/LR-

15-FEB-25 - MEDICAL - HEARTWORM POSITIVE (TEMPLATE) What is the medical issue? This dog was diagnosed with Heartworm disease at the shelter. Heartworm disease is caused by large worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing lung disease, heart failure, and other organ damage. What has PRC done so far? This dog has begun treatment for this disease. A 30 day course of doxycycline will be completed, followed by a 30 day 'rest' period. If this dog has not completed meds prior to adoption, you should receive a prescription to fill at a pharmacy to obtain remaining doses. Two months after diagnosis, if healthy enough for treatment as determined by PRC veterinarians, your dog can receive injections to kill adult heartworms at the PRC. This injection is a medication called "Diroban" which is injected into the large muscles of the back. Two injections are given 24 hours apart, per FDA guidelines. This protocol kills about 90% of heartworms and is recommended for stage 1 and 2 heartworm disease. Alternatively, adopters can elect to pursue heartworm treatment with their veterinarian. Your veterinarian may recommend additional diagnostics prior to treatment, or may recommend a slightly different protocol. What can the adopter expect? This dog should receive heartworm prevention monthly year-round for the rest of the its life to prevent another infection. Next month's dose of prevention will be dispensed; you must follow up with your vet for continued prevention. Your pet should be retested 6 months after treatment for heartworm disease, and then yearly thereafter. Your vet may recommend additional diagnostics or treatments. All further care is the responsibility of the adopter. Comments: Heartworm treatment is not benign. Some pets may have adverse reactions to heartworm treatment, including swelling at the injection site, pain, and respiratory issues. In rare cases the dying worms in the bloodstream might fall apart and cause a thrombus (blockage of a blood vessel). If this happens your pet might have respiratory distress and could die. Any activities that cause panting or elevated heart rate can increase the risk of a thrombus. It is critical that your pet is crate rested for 6 weeks following treatment and is only allowed to go outside for short periods of time on a leash to urinate/defecate. A medical staff member will go over any questions you may have at discharge.
